Customer Review: Great for Beginner or Light Use

I really like this camcorder! It does everything I need it to, and has a few surprises that I am having fun experimenting with (like a brightness control and different recording modes). The controls are super easy to use, and it's very lightweight and portable. It's smaller than my digital camera! I love the built-in memory (so convenient!) and charging it and transferring videos is really easy. I ditched the editing software that came with it and just use Windows Movie Maker, no problem. The zoom is pretty impressive for a small, inexpensive camera. I was hoping for 10x zoom and this is obviously a lot more! Plus, the zoom controls are on the back of the unit (for handheld work) AND on the screen (if you flip it around and film yourself). That is really handy - this was a well thought out device in terms of usability.
As for picture quality/versatility, I did not go in expecting high performance from this camera, you will be disappointed if you expect to film your next masterpiece or your favorite sports event with this camera. Yes, it has anti-shake, yes it has auto-focus, but don't expect it to perform to the level of a much more expensive camera. It is entry level, meaning it is good for beginners (like me) or for anyone who wants an ultra-portable device for shooting simpler videos. I create vlog and tutorial videos with this camera, so the ability to turn the viewscreen right around and see what I am filming whilst looking into the lens is great, plus it does pretty well even in bad lighting. Not great, but I didn't buy a $500+ camera, did I? I also like to make family videos and also had the opportunity to record a special event last week with it, and the video looks great. A huge plus: it's extremely unobtrusive, so I wasn't the guest with the huge camera in my hand that people could see coming a mile away. I was the stealth videographer. Magic!
I only have two issues with this camera: the microphone is maybe a little TOO sensitive. It picks up some background hiss, and you can even hear the operator breathing if the room is quiet enough! That could be good, but it also has its downside. I hold the unit further away from my face now, about a foot, which I hear is "standard" for filming with a viewscreen, anyway, so that was probably my newbie mistake. Fortunately, a little audio editing can help tone down any unwanted background noise.
The other issue is the input/charging ports... they are behind a panel in the camera, so you first open the viewscreen, then open the panel to reveal the input/charge ports. It's nice that they chose to make those ports flat and covered (to avoid getting dust in them, etc) but I wish it were on the other side of the camera, rather than forcing me to open the view screen first. I have visions of the unit dropping or getting knocked off the table and snapping off the viewscreen. :) A minor point, but I figured I would mention it.
All in all, a great little camera, especially for the price.
