I'm not really a gadget guy. So my ability to review this product is limited by my not owning multiple camcorders. I have owned two generations of Flip Video camcorders, which is not really a full featured camcorder at all.
So, I am going to frame my review by trying to target it to people like myself, who are apt to have direct experience with two or three camcorders over a decade or two and who instead of owning several over the next few years, are looking for just one to last a decade.
First, the clarity of the picture when used under optimal circumstances is absolutely shocking. It is everything that you associate with High Def. Just a beautiful, precise, nuanced video. the one big caveat is that you have to be very careful about moving the camcorder. Although it is supposed to be resistant to movement, I found that it is pretty intolerant to being moved. On a tripod or even used by hand with minimal movement the camera provides an absolutely perfect picture. But I found that with some videos I took the shaking was too extensive for the video to be usable. You cannot, for instance, walk and make a decent video. This probably says more about my own mistaken assumptions rather than realistic expectations, but I was disappointed at how shaky many of my videos were. But on a tripod, they were perfect.
The camcorder is very pleasant to the touch, easy-to-hold, simple to use. There are nuances that I have not yet been able to access because it does not come with a printed manual. One is included on a CD, but that basically means it is unusable. But despite its small size, the viewing screen is quite usable, though in bright sunlight you simply can't see what you are framing. As others have noted, the camcorder does not do very well in minimal light, but it does handle the transition from bright sunlight to shade extremely well. You can also film things with the sun behind them with good results. The problem with shaking is greatly exacerbated when you are using the zoom, but if the camera is held steady when on maximum zoom, there is no degradation to the picture quality.
As far as the photo function goes, it does have a tendency to get out of focus on high zoom. But for the most part I am quite pleased with the camera function.
One downside is that the camcorder does not come with any kind of carrying case or even a close pouch. So if you buy one of these from Amazon, I recommend buying a case at the same time.
All in all, this is a superb camcorder that will meet most people's expectations and needs. Used correctly it will provide amazing results.
